Question about the escape being literal and not metaphorical

Can it be both? For example, a character trying to escape a time loop/dream world (literal place) by learning to let go of an obsession or vice. If that makes sense.

The gameplay would still be centered around exploration and puzzles, and you would still be trying to escape a physical PLACE, but the place and the things in it would be representative of something more abstract.

Oh sure. The literal escape could also be used as a metaphor, there just has to be a literal escape.
