Just under 1 month. Learned Phaser and game development during the month as well.

Cool stuff! You were able to fit quite a lot in - I liked how there were a wide array of levels with different environments, nice!

Other things that were nice:

  • Sound effects included!
  • Fun music
  • Pretty nice menu, something I know I often neglect but its a nice way to start
  • I liked how you did the tutorial

Couple things I'd love to see:

  • Felt like there was a story somewhere in this game with all the different environments, I think it'd add a lot to just include at least a little intro blurb providing some context? Better yet, figure out a way to tell a story as you progress through the levels!
  • The art style of all the different assets didn't match up, where I think consistency would've been nice. 
  • Not always clear what platforms were walkable vs what was part of the background. Not clear where the destination of the level was.
  • I didn't love points in levels where you weren't sure where the next platform was because it was somewhere offscreen.

Thanks so much for playing and for your detailed review! Really great points about art and story. Those are two aspects that definitely needed a lot more work I think. I think having a story would have been a really awesome addition, just didn’t have enough time to work it in for the jam.

Hi Ben!

This is the first project of yours I have played so I wasn't sure of your skill level going into it. I would say this is a solid entry given that you just learned your gamedev tools this month. There was some polish stuff like improper tilling sprites that noticed. I am sure with some more experience with your tools you will learn how to fix these. From a game design standpoint, I thought this was a pretty simple platformer. Nothing wrong with it but it wasn't as deep as it could be I felt. 1 more extra mechanic (Shooting, Wall jumps, Powerups) would have helped with this I think. Also the difficulty pacing felt a little off with a big spike in level 4. I'd say you have built a good foundational skill set and I am excited to see where you go from here!

Thanks so much for your detailed review! Level design was definitely one of the biggest challenges for me. I thought I could just slap some levels together but it turned out to be quite a challenge and a lot more difficult than that. The sprites I definitely didn’t get a chance to fix but noticed as well. I love the idea of adding more mechanics to make the game interesting. Thanks for your input and thanks for playing!
