I think it's preety obvious, but i haven't seen anyone talk about it. I believe tak the "reaserch" Murrow stole from the bat lady is conected to cole being the son of both marrow and hamish, it would explain why he was very "sick" When he was young and is smaller than most hyenas and why we never heard about his mother. I think the Spell/ritual was succesfull but it had lasting side effects on cole.

But really, I’m hoping there’s no mpreg stuff. Female hyenas already have it difficult as it is, I don’t even want to imagine the male alternative.
Kidding aside I think Marrow wanted to prove his worth as a wizard to his father (the story seems to point to him being Gaius O’Shannessy) so he stole some reasearch to do just that, but something went wrong, this being possibly related to that betrayal he talked about, and he got that scar on his face.
I think Marrow was in an arranged marriage and Cole comes from it; maybe the birth of his son pushed him to want to prove himself quicker, or his father was the one to push him; when shit went down he fled with his lover (Hamish) and his newly born son. Cole’s mother could have died in that incident, or the events that followed; it would make it so Marrow didn’t just take Cole away from her.
