A really great piece. How do you handle all those vertices!

Take one element at a time. You may have to move things out of the way to a temporary spot while you work on it, then move it into place. A lot of rotating around the 3D view to get a "feel" for things. Use 3D wireframe to pinpoint and select verts when you need to. Check out the game page for a YouTube link of a timelapse.
