About bug: I tried to recreate and got it.
To start this you have to go at the first forest, then left, up, up, right (deadend location when you had to collect flovers for Mona).
There will be only one kitsune that triggers this for some reason every time. (the one that spawns in the upper side).
It works at all day time (tried for morning, evening and night).
No battle mechanics opened.
