"it is what it says on the tin! what else do you want?"

- ken netbuffoon

Hey! Thanks for checking out my devlog. I'm Ken, and as this is my first time ever making a game of any kind I'm opting for something extremely simple: you walk around a couple of simple maps of varying size and complexity, and you have conversations with some funny pixel art birds about the concept of freedom, where I maybe get a little too pretentious with my writing and hope people get something out of it while I figure out coding slightly better, maybe.

Hopefully I'll be able to update this on a consistent basis, but the timing does suck because a lot of stuff has been happening in my life, and I also totally forgot Art Fight was around the same time and I'm not great at allocating my time sooo wish me luck?

Things I am currently figuring out as of posting:

  • Basically everything? lol
  • I need to map out specifics (such as the maps themselves, the number and sizes and layouts, how do things progress, what can be implemented as an "ending" for something like this if anything and if that means some kind of structured story) and start writing text for the characters.
  • The characters themselves will just be some birds I draw. Bigger issue is making the map art, something I have limited practice with.
  • Also, this is a little late to be doing this but I'm still not entirely certain of the actual game making program. It should be noted that no matter how cheap something is I have zero money like genuinely I cannot buy any program. I've been testing out an extremely simple RPG maker (not that one) but its so simple I don't actually think it can do some of even the small things I want this to be able to do. I also have Godot but have no clue how to work it. I would still need to research how you could make an RPG in that.

ohhhh i love small rpgs like this. it's totally possible to make something like this in godot--not sure if you're actually looking to implement standard RPG mechanics into the game but breaking down the mechanics and focusing on starting with character movement, collisions, and interaction would be a good place to start. it's possible that someone has also written a dialogue system for godot but by the time you get movement and other stuff down you'll likely find a simple dialogue system can be pretty straightforward. also haha i only just realized we overlapped with art fight... i'm wishing you the best of luck! it sounds like your project is pretty scalable though and honestly as long as you're having fun + approaching dev in a healthy way i think you'll be fine!

thank you!! i'm juggling a couple things and i was mostly busy today, but i actually found a godot tutorial  that was in the gamejam resource links that focuses on making an rpg and i started reading that, so i feel pretty confident about it now! i dont have anything else on my plate tomorrow so here's to making some more progress. :)

While beating the heat here in the Pacific Northwest by staying inside in front of a fan all day, I'm happy to say I've made good progress! I'm getting a good grasp on Godot and how to make what I want in it, I've been practicing drawing birds, and then I started to plan out a couple of possible scenes starting with a sketch of layouts.

Pictured: said sketches lol
