You need to hold the right mouse button and build posts and stairs. every post allows floor expansion of 3x3. For the floors you hold right mouse button and use floors.
Lorenzo_253 to build staircase you need to hold the hammer then right click and keep holding until you reach the stair-case. And they should tell you the material when you select it
