Astounding. Gorgeous to look at, perfect level of creep to understanding, just tricky enough puzzle-wise, some truly heart-aching revelations. Just wall to wall great stuff!

I just want to note that I ran into a small bug; in The Slow Vanishing. In the very first instance of the hallway, if one looks at the statue of Mnemosyne first the camera tweens back to the area with the doors for no apparent reason. This isn't game breaking; you can walk back to that area and then return to the hallway, but figured you might like to know! What a labour of love <3

(+2)

Hey, thanks so much for reporting! I managed to reproduce this bug and it seems to be caused by an edge case in which, if you don't cross completely from one side to another and manage to remain standing right on the trigger region that switches the camera from right to left and viceversa, *and* you look at any statue for the first time, the engine thinks that you're trying to go back to the corridor you came from and tweens the camera back accordingly.

I think I have managed to patch it up, but it's 3:30 AM here, so I'll test again in the morning to be sure, and upload a new build if everything looks ok. Really appreciate the heads up!

(+1)

ok, files updated. This should fix the issue!

Happy to have helped; thanks again for a really great experience :D

Just amazing! I love the story

(1 edit) (+2)

I just finished this after deciding it looked interesting enough to download.

I think it was absolutely brilliant. I can see why some might compare it to the last door but the animation and graphics are a whole level up from that, in fact it has some of my fav animation i've seen in a game like this for years.

Wonderful stuff, I hope very much you choose to make more :)

Gorgeous, simply exquisite! Loved how different each story felt in terms of presentation and how we gradually sank deeper and deeper into some truly creepy (and fleshy) stuff! Winterbourne's section with its masterful use of shadow and color, her gradually fading away (literally), and how the various objects in the mansion shift in description as the days of drug-addled fantasy take their hold is especially MAGNIFICENT - that part alone makes this whole adventure worth the price of admission... And it's FREE??? WHAT??? NO

In any case, this was amazing and I look forward to seeing more from you - whether it's more set in this world you've created, or maybe in other, perhaps even stranger adventures to come!

(+1)

Thank you so much! It's always such a pleasure when someone really pays attention to the little details like the changing descriptions. Makes all the work put into it truly worth it :)

Stunningly beautiful game, every element is gorgeous. Amazing job!

This looks amazeballs!

(1 edit)

thank you so much for making this game! i can't wait for the digital artbook & ost package release plan, also it's very impressive how much attention this game has gotten in less than a week after the release (hopefully getting in more positive reviews)! congratulations, i wish all the best!

Thank you too for giving it a spin! The attention it's gotten has been mindblowing and, honestly, completely unexpected, haha. I hope that when we release the DLC it will get the same attention :) Cheers!

Here it goes. I appreciated so much your game. I keep an eye on your works. The endings is wicked! Awesome at all sense. Congratulations to you Laura Hunt and to your partner Thomas Mörhing, you both be my guess and comments free will there. You both I read and hear if videos are good or bad, the game choices are good or bad, and I shall accepting  your suggest. I have only single ask more to do. Might I left in "Best video to new viewrs" one of yours? This is my list. Apologize me about my humble videos doesn't worth of your art craft. Because this game is a small masterpiece, congratulations. And you, Laura Hunt, nice to meet you as a developer and a cool and sweet person that you've been shown. It all was a pleasure, since playing your game as well talking to you. Thank you so much.

Game is awesome! For some reason I cannot get past interacting with the  table clock, when it says "what time should I set" the game freezes, cant esc or any keys. Reproduced 3x

Hi, the game is not frozen; it is waiting for you to input the correct time. Use your numerical keyboard or the normal number key row to enter it and you will see it displayed above the player character's head.

so this is how it happened, when the prompt popped up its yellow lines so i didnt even see it at first, and then I typed '3' a bunch of times and since 3 is not a 00:00 time value in the hour slot , I got no prompt at all saying that, so if you type 3-9 and don't see the lines, you have no idea, maybe throw an error prompt on there, or change the yellow lines to red, thanks for the quick response games seriously great

(+1)

Very great game, atmospheric and filled with emotions!

This is one of the funnest games I've ever played

wow the artstyle of the game reminds me of the last door game nicework

and the story is just mind blowing

(+3)(-1)

Such gripping stories. The way Lady Winterbourne's was presented and uncovered was brilliant. It shook me emotionally pretty hard. In Samuel's story I stupidly missed the books right next to the herbs which led me to do my own research instead haha. Learned a few things about herbs and alchemy so that's nice (finally noticed the books when I mixed up Mercury and Saturn and looked more thoroughly).

Thank you for the Linux version and thank you for this game.

Oh wow, that's amazing, ahaha! Now *that* is dedication! Thank you for giving us a chance and for persevering against all odds 😀

(+1)

Amazing game, just, everything is great about it, the storytelling, graphics. I didn't expect anything unusual to happen, barely read the description and the first story caught me off guard so much i legit got scared.

Thank you for this game!

Thank you for playing it and for taking the time to comment! :)

This game reminded me of that time I was riding a train to work, and then this stranger tells me his story of how he divorced his wife. At that time I just wanted to disappear, but having played "If On A Winter's Night, Four Travelers," I realize my experience could have been a lot worse.

A moving train. A masked ball. Four strangers with haunting stories. Where are they going? Why is Patrick such a prick? wHaT iS tRaiN?

Playing this was an incredible experience. Beautiful pixel art. A brave and profound story, intensified by themes of morality. Love it, love it, love it. Congratulations, Dead Idle Games!

Well, you have a new fan then!

OMG, salut for your work. Amazing Arts and code for a project with such small team. May I ask how much time you spend on that?

Almost two years!

(+1)

Wow. Really impressed and inspiring. Wish you the best with anything that comes after this game. Everything is right from art to text to music. This really encourages me to go on with my next game.

(+1)(-1)

I glad to see it! I was missing games with curious story, point ' n ' click with a hard puzzles. Later I come back to share here the playlist of If On Winter's Night Four Travelers, I o v i n g so much this game. Thanks to share this version with us. I will keep on an eye here. Note - 5 five stars. Linux version so far is running pretty fine.

Sorry I've only few minutes, Google's bureaucracy

I'll bring here asap the list. Thanks and greetings from Brazil.  :)

Hey, thanks. What is it with the overlays at certain points, though?

Ah, the title in begin and ending video part. Didn't you like that? Uploading more parts right now. I really appreciating this one, I barely awaiting to finish upload to keep going to know what physician story and how that stories gathering to uncover why they invited to that costume party and what common perspective about them join the main story.  ;) It's really fascinating I loving your game Laura Hunt and Dead Idle Games. Did you realize the title colours is that where all beginning, at the train's windows? ;)

No, not at the ending and beginning; I meant that the title appears suddenly in the middle of some specific events, and I was just wondering why this was.

Oh, I cut off some delay in my gameplay. hahahaha Where and when I get me lost or I had been waste many times to fetch something or noted to stripe some parallel to puzzle. hehehehe  I thought: "Geez is to late to solve these combinations. I just have 15 minutes time at video. I am not monetized  I thought it is because the Google doesn't send my code phone to expand my time :/  , they just ignore my asks to increase my video time over 15 minutes, so I need to cut off some delays, sorry. I cut a lot things in Dr.Samuel, I need translate the books and traced a parallel between both. I loving this game. It remember to me "Dawn Fall" and "The Last Door", but your game is much more hard. I uploading chapter 3(Dr.Samuel's chapter I meant). I eager to bring here the complete list. I will continues. Laura Haunt did you think about to send this game to CJU an english youtube producer. I love that guy, this one would help a lot, he is fancy in comments and et coetera. I show here his channel, I would love watch there, If I had a fluent pronounce in english I will record with voice and comments. But brazilians doesn't like my contents, Indie games content sad dozen. :/ CJU to think about to share, I recommend his good taste and good comment. Here, I hope you like him as well : https://www.youtube.com/CjuGames

Beautiful game! Really loved the themes in this game and the complex writing and design around it. My favorite game of 2021 - I'm calling it early.

(+1)

Wow, thank you so much :)

(+1)

Only things that are a little off is the movement speed (Or at least let players use WASD) and cutscenes are a little slow, and what you're supposed to do next can be a bit hard to figure out.

Beautiful game! <3 <3 <3 I really liked it so far!
But I just ran into a problem in the second story - I left my room and walked into the direction of the stairs. Now I cannot go back into the direction of the maiden's chamber (my character walked out of the screen)

(2 edits)

Oh my, that's so weird! Have you tried walking back towards the stairs? Hopefully if you walk back in that direction, make sure you take a few steps past the first statue, and then go back normally, you will probably be able to reset the camera.

I'm in love just seeing the videos on youtube! Do you plan to release a Mac version?

Not for now, sorry! Maybe when we launch on Steam in a few months we'll add a Mac version to itch.io, but right now I can't confirm it, unfortunately.

(+1)

Awesome, thanks!

(+1)

Hauntingly beautiful, thank you!

(1 edit)

Gonna be honest, I only clicked on this thinking it was related to the book "If on a winters night, a traveler...".

But after reading what you put here sounds like it not. But I'm definitely gonna give it a go tonight. Pretty excited!

It's vaguely inspired by the book, as by so many other things that influenced us, and you might recognize a passage from it hidden away somewhere, but no, it's not an adaptation. I hope you find something to enjoy in any case :)

wow thanx   laura hunt  now i am  in peace cause i was.... like i really wanted to knew thanx anyway

(-1)

now i can play it yeah i didn t play it untill you respond haha

Just crossed my mind: Are there any plans include language options in the game? Just out of curiousity.

Nope, sorry!

(+2)

Here are my words of appreciation :-)

Such a lovely review! Thank you!

(+1)

Without a doubt, an excellent adventure. The art is splendid, the choice of the soundtrack was very happy, and the narrative is interesting. Very good indeed.

Thanks for playing it!

(1 edit)

Loved it, really atmospheric! The Roaring 20s vibes are spot on!

If anyone else wants to run this on a Macbook: just download PlayOnMac and launch the .exe from a virtual drive.

Oh, that's great to know. I'll suggest this if anybody asks me about playing on Mac, thank you very much for the tip.

What a game! I love it! Great Story!

(+1)

If anybody else having a problem under Linux because of the engine not finding game data, and you have Unicode characters in the path, move the game to a path with only ANSI characters.

Nice game!!!

Thanks for the tip! Nobody has reported having this issue so far, but it's great to know in case it happens to someone, much appreciated!

(-1)

Also here the Linux version didn't work, played the Windows version via Wine on Ubuntu (which ran smoothly out of the box).

What was the issue exactly, did it simply not run, or did it crash at some point? Did you get any error message that could help pinpoint the problem?

The terminal shows me an error in room15.asc, line 60. Maybe a " missing or something, AGS can be quite picky ;-)

(1 edit)

Oh, that looks like you might have the sound turned off in your settings or it failed to initialize for some reason and the game crashed because of a call to an Audiochannel resulting in a null pointer error. It's weird that it did not complain in Wine though!

Ubuntu version 20.10. The console log is:

Thanks for reporting!

I like this a lot! i loooove pixel art quite a bit.

enough to make a vid on it!

This was so cool, thanks for sharing! It's always really interesting to see how everybody finds their way around the game (and screaming at the screen "nooo, click there! No, there!" hahah). Hope you go back to it soon and discover what else there is in store!

What a beautifull game you have made. Hopping to get your artbook when you release it.

Thanks so much, appreciate the support!

Wow, blown away by this piece. As a game developer with a background in theatre the premise and the idea behind the game felt familiar in an almost nostalgic way. The characters and their stories were beautifully written and the gameplay helped me connect to them in a powerful way.

This is going on my list of favourite narrative experiences along with Disco Elysium, The Return of Obra Dinn and What Remains of Edith Finch.

From reading your replies to other comments I understand why you don't want to charge any money for it but could you consider accepting a donation somehow? Either for yourself or a charity of somekind?

(1 edit) (+3)

Thank you for the offer, but as cheesy as it may sound, our best reward is reading comments like these and knowing our work has touched so many people :) Seeing IOAWN4T compared to those titles makes me feel so incredibly honoured.

Do you have any plans to release on Steam/other platforms — perhaps with your future 'deluxe' edition? I do so hate Steam's monopoly, but on the other hand I'd also hate to see this not touch many more people who don't use this ecosystem.

Is there anywhere I can subscribe to be notified about the OST/artbook package? (I.e. if it is listed under this game page, I don't know if following you on Itch will notify me)

Yes! We're definitely aiming for a Steam release, even if it takes us a few months :)

As to being notified here on itch, the best thing you can do is definitely follow us on here and when the package is released I will make sure to make a proper dev update so nobody misses it. You won't have to worry about getting spammed with other useless updates, since I hate flooding followers' feeds with annoying crap that only makes it harder to notice the important stuff!

(+1)

Brilliant, thank you Laura :)

(1 edit)

Wonderfully interwoven narrative. Incredibly horrifying yet human at the same time

(+1)

"Incredibly horrifying yet human at the same time" would make a fantastic blurb, hahah. Thanks!

I just finished this in a single sitting and it's been a long time since I was so entranced by a game. Absolutely fantastic in every way, thank you for making this!

Thank *you* for playing!

(+1)

Omg, this game looks so good :D

Thanks for this experience! Amazing pixel art and really compelling characters.  Depressing and horrifying! Can't wait for more haha

Haha glad you... enjoyed? it 😄

This looks great.. Any plans to make a build for macOS?

Unfortunately not, sorry! We might consided it for future games but for this one it's not in our plans at all.

(+1)

I see that scummvm (scummvm.org) has experimental support for AGS games, so you might be able to play it through that!

That might work! Also, somebody suggested using PlayOnMac, so it could be worth giving that a try too.

This is just incomprehensibly good for a free game. The craftsmanship in storytelling and artistry is INSANE.

(+1)

Love to read something like this, thank you!

Compelling story, amazing art and OMG the atmosphere. 💜💜💜
