Just like any other industry, some people make more money than they need, some people make just enough, some people make barely any. The problem for most people, is managing to make a game that has good graphics and good gameplay, and not if they manage to sell copies of it or not.
There are people who pay for games here, from what I’ve heard the majority of games here are paid. If anything, indie games have some unique qualities not found in AAA games, mostly because they are not “mainstream” and are considered risky, so there are plenty of people willing to invest in the indie scene to find such games.
Not sure how an answer will help you though, most devs have to make multiple projects before they reach a point where they can make something profitable, so if you think you can just make a game within a week and sell millions, I’d have to disappoint you. The reality for most people is that they spend months/years creating content, before they start getting more popularity.
