As for running the simulator in a window, that is already possible. On windows, you can simply press Alt+Enter.
You can also do it by adding command line parameters to the exe file as describe in the manual, that will enable you to set the resolution too.
For example:
-screen-fullscreen 0 -screen-width 800 -screen-height 450
