Hey, thanks for reporting this, and sorry you lost your run. I tried to recreate it on my end and couldn’t. I tested in standard Firefox, and in a more privacy focused browser (ungoogled Chromium), and both kept progress after fully closing and reopening.

The game saves your progress in your browser’s own storage, so anything that clears site data when the browser closes will wipe it. In Firefox that’s usually one of these:

  • Settings -> Privacy & Security -> “Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed”
  • History set to “Never remember history” or “Clear history when Firefox closes”
  • Playing in a private window
  • An extension that clears cookies or site data (for example Cookie AutoDelete)

Could you check whether any of those apply to you? If none do, tell me your Firefox version and which Enhanced Tracking Protection setting you use (Standard, Strict or Custom), and I’ll keep digging.

If you want to keep those privacy settings, you can add an exception for the game.

The option 'clear cookies and site data every time you close Firefox' is turned off, my history is set to 'remember history', I did not play in a private window, and I don't have any cookie or data-clearing extensions. I also did not play this game in a private window.

I'm using Firefox Version 157.0.1 (64-bit) with Custom Enhanced Tracking Protection. 'Fix major site issues' is not enabled, I'm isolating cross-site cookies, tracking content in all windows, and have protection from cryptominers, known fingerprinters, and suspected fingerprinters in private windows.

None of these settings have changed recently, and other Itch games save my data just fine, so I'm not sure what could be causing this.

Thanks for checking all of that, it helps a lot. Your settings are fine. I’ve since found other reports of Unity browser games on the same engine version losing saves after the browser is fully closed, even though saving works on my end. The way Unity hands saves to the browser is the likely weak spot, and it could be failing on your setup even though it works on mine.

So I’m updating the game to save more deliberately, it will write your progress straight to the browser’s storage itself instead of relying on Unity to do it. I might also add in manual save exports and imports as a backup, so you can keep a copy of your progress yourself.

The update will also carry over any progress the game already has saved, so nobody playing now will have to start again. A save that’s already been lost can’t be brought back, but from the update on, your progress will be saved properly. I’ll post a dev log when it’s live.

Thank you very much for explaining all of this. I really appreciate how responsive you were about it, and the ability to export saves is a good fallback. I'll definitely give this game another look once that's been implemented.
