the idea that each prince’s route hides secrets the other won’t reveal is so good. did you map the palace mystery first and split the clues between them, or did the two routes grow separately as you wrote?

A bit of both? Max is in charge of the military, and Lucian is in charge of the court intrigue, so they know different things about what happened in the past and what is happening right now. The two routes are completely different, and except for the final masquerade, which happens in both, there are no overlaps in their story.
