The game says "START". If you then return to the main menu it will say "LOAD" indicating you have a game saved on this slot.
The 3 slots are just 3 save games. So I'm not sure what you mean by "you don't know what the run feels like". They are all identical. You have to actually start the game to see what a run feels like :)
