There is definitely a story going on here that I'm not doing a particularly great job of getting across - and the soundtrack suffers in exactly the way you have described. I was writing this while developing a game for a concurrent game jam, so I was operating on the game itself giving the context for these tracks - but failing to remember that the soundtrack itself is being presented alone.
