sorry but I’m very confused about how to play this and if someone could help explain the “high level objectives” it would be nice. When I go through gates I just sort of wander around and eventually pass a point of no return back to the center without knowing whether I accomplished anything or not.

Hi there,
just like with any other metroidvania style game you need to explore all the paths repeatedly, upgrade your gear to enable access to new paths and thus eventually collect all the stuff/finish all the objectives. If you look closely the planetary map gives you hints which gates on each individual planet hold new secrets for you.
