Using the Defend skill gives you a hint about the monster. Attacks, explosion and ice magic hurt their HP. Seduction and fire magic reduces their WP. Some enemies are stronger than you at first so pick your battles and either run or surrender to fights you can't win yet. Some enemies have a special trick to them and the hint is in colored text.
