The points you have after dying to an enemy would be us giving you some baseline points (as we skip the tutorial levels) otherwise skipping the tutorials on a retry and starting with no points would give you less total score than if you just refreshed the browser :). Yeah unfortunately a timezone mixup with a team member was the cause of no sfx. As to how many cogs you need, the cogs text flashes when you have enough. Not especially great by itself (would have been accompanied with sfx).
