Thank you so much for playing the game and taking the time to comment!! We wish there was more of an explanation too haha.
With the way we crunched at the end to get something submittable, we decided to just make it function as a game loop and go back to fix the story telling later...which did not really pan out :P.
Original Concept
You are a shapeless ghost who doesn't remember who you are, at the start you just see "Name - Gardener" on your grave as your only information. As you interact with people you remember more things about what kind of person you were. There are some basic gardening tasks you can do, but they don't progress anything. There are some other "key" tasks that teach you NEW information about yourself.
We simplified it to 4 key people for the jam Grandson - Daughter - Friend - Wife (no particular order). If we had time we would have wanted you to progress and become less shapeless as you learned about yourself, as well as more things populating the world (for example you play with the Grandson and an entire park area with interactables is realized). At the end of the game if you had time to fully explore the world you would unlock a new cutscene of your fully realized self surrounded by loved ones, gladly going to the afterlife knowing you lived a full life.
Instead we just had time to have a simple concept of revealing parts of your grave at the end showing more of who you were with some text labels.
I'm glad so many people are finding it cute as that was a goal!
