I'm really bad at this I think. It feels like time speeds up and slows down too much, or maybe I just don't understand what contributes to my speed. But it's its a cool concept!
You go faster on the grind rails and when you kill enemies. Ground pound sometimes slows you down. I hope that makes it make sense, but I might have forgotten to mention something.
