Interesting concept! I don't know if I'm bad at math, or its just 2 in the morning, but I did not do very well. Probably both lol. I wonder if there might be a bit more of a strategy element involved if you could see the structure of the equation before you choose the numbers - so you can try to form an easier equation before building it.
