This game is awesome, but dang is it difficult compared to many other Mega Man fan games! Because it uses the traditional 4:3 NES screen ratio, I frequently got cheap-shotted by enemies I couldn't see ahead of me. This was especially rough in the "Mega Man's head" levels, where you can't save or access the shop at all. I also encountered a lot of cheap deaths in the later Wily Stages. The checkpoints there are very far apart, which got pretty frustrating. I noticed the options menu has an "extra checkpoints" toggle, but I didn't turn it on because I wanted to maintain a classic game experience.
The Special Weapons are all superb. Admittedly, I didn't use most of them much, except for Arctic Man's weapon to freeze lava hazards and Beam Man's weapon (which reminded me of Pikachu's Up-Special in Smash and was incredibly helpful). However, only being able to carry two special equips at a time is extremely annoying. Unlike the classic games, you can't keep all your movement options on hand. If you are trying to collect CDs and catch mobs, you essentially have to choose between equipping Rush Search or the Net, as you usually need a mobility option like the Platform or the Rush Phaser to reach some very specific locations. Having to constantly go back to Dr. Light's menu just to swap equipment is incredibly tedious. This could have easily been prevented by putting all Rush utilities into a permanent sub-menu, reserving the special equipment slots strictly for items like the Health Seed, Super Arrow, and stuff like the Platforms.
While the achievements and challenges are a great feature that might motivate me to 100% the game one day, I ended up stopping out of frustration. I couldn't find Roll anywhere to get her secret scene achievement, despite already beating the main game and the Secret Boss. Speaking of the secret boss, that was another UI issue: after collecting all the letters, the game gives you absolutely no indication that you have to use the weapon switch buttons to cycle the center piece of the stage select screen to access it. I really hope the game gets an update or a mod to address these issues down the road, as a few quality-of-life improvements would go a very long way!
