Reading this made me feel really, really bad.

Fantistic sound design. Beautiful art. Masterful prose.

Nobody makes it through childhood unscathed. It hurt seeing C--- get treated in ways familiar to my own upbringing; ways I have thoughout my adult life slowly been un-repressing. Memories of sexual awakening during sexual abuse, that only became available to me through recreating those scenes as an adult. Feelings of overwhelming rejection of getting teased and turned on by caretakers, and then being turned down. Buying forgiveness with fast food, video games, bread and circuses. Being degraded, ignored, talked down to, praised, overwhelmingly praised. Being made to provide intimacy to your parents, or anyone they instruct you to, and being expected to do so eagerly, lest my rejection hurt their feelings. Being beaten and neglected into a perfect, precocious child. Struggling to simply survive the environment you were born into, never given any indication that things aren't supposed to be this way. Being the perfect child and understanding it will never be enough and that terrifying you. Growing attached to, loving, and *needing* the abuse that you've grown to expect.

And loving the people who put you through that.

The body keeps the score, and good god, i'm losing harder than i can bear to understand.

This story was difficult to read. I imagine it was moreso to live through, and doubly so to share. Thank you for doing so in spite of that.

Here's p———'s response, as you saw in the server (posted here for posterity): "i'm really sorry you also went through being a kid like this.. i think something that still makes me really angry about the way kids are treated is like.. being loved around people and misloved when people aren't around.. knowing nothing you do will fix things.. and especially how they tell you how you're supposed to feel or react so you don't even get to have your own feelings or boundaries..  thank you very much for reading our story and especially sharing the visual notes you took,, which really hurt to look at but like in the way that it hurts to be seen,, you know?? i hope you treated yourself to something nice after reading it 💖💖💖💖"

I think something I wanted to add is that we've struggled for a long time with "re-parenting [ourselves]", that is to say, giving ourselves now the quality and amount of attention and care and guidance we deserved then. Part of it was like a resentment of having to do it instead of someone else doing it (like, "isn't the point that it's someone else doing the caring?", "[we] do enough work already"). But I also think part of it was that it didn't make much sense until looking at our CPTSD through a plural framework and recognizing that behind the flashbacks were entire stuck parts in need of that re-parenting work. I was thinking about this in response to your later comment about the difficulty of relearning how to feel and like and dislike (which I 100% relate to and it feels like a big part of re-parenting is the work of helping each other figure out those things).

the impulse of "taking care of me was someone else's job, and I already do so much, so I won't do that" is tough to manage.

Honestly, a big hurdle for me getting better was internalizing that I deserved to get better. It feels like acknowledging the things you need means acknowledging that you always needed it.

Letting go of the belief that somehow it was our fault, or that we deserved to be mistreated the way that we did was incredibly painful for us, because it was a crutch we were using to ease the psychological pain of all that happening to us.

I'm glad you like the art! I think taking notes like this works a lot better for me than taking text notes does. Plus, I've been learning how to draw for the last 2 years, and it's great practice for that.
