The harem path isn't mandatory. You can choose which girl you want to pursue, but only the main LI's will have a complete solo route. The others will have a fun side route, which all lead to the final harem.
So none of the current girls are really "secondary", they don't just appear once in the early game only to disappear forever after. All of them will receive plenty of attention🙂

I have one more question. Since only the main love interests will have full solo routes while the side love interests lead to the harem path, is that distinction already established in the current version of the game?
In other words, can players already tell which girls are main LIs and which are side LIs, or is that something you'll reveal or decide in future updates?
As of 0.13 (upcoming update), main or side LI's aren't explicitly labeled, though you can probably guess who will get the most screen time.
Since there will be new girls added in 0.14, I will split the gallery into Main and Side girls for better clarity.
As development goes, "side" girls may become main ones and have a more complete solo route!
