I don't know if it has been mentioned before, but I believe that Nagisa is a tanuki, also known as a raccoon dog.

Raccoon Dogs are more closely related to foxes, but they do have raccoon-like markings.
i guess i should go back and try that, i had a pleasant reaction when i talked about panda so i didn't search further xD
I thought she was a boar? Though when she explains her origins, Tanuki definitely fits that better than a boar.
