i played this in the middle of my finals and i think its time to recollect and reflect
Odessa and Fabiane's final moment makes me think of the missing stair problem.
Dog Days Dog Daze's cast is defined by their relationships to the alienation from polite society facing a perpetual transfeminine underclass. Whereas Faye, the tragic backbone, provides the material aid of a well-to-do outsider to Lee that always gives her security and leads to her sister becoming a place of healing for other girls, her lover in Odessa by contrast shoulders a realist sense about the preservation of her community, being the one who calls others out on their shit (mostly Faye), who doesnt want to just play tetris and become desensitized to trauma, and can't forget the psychedelic visions that might lead to the 'right future' for her friends. Their femme provider and butch hardliner casting did help solidify this impression in me.
Then, there is Fabiane, as unfair her circumstances, who is to be the cause of others' addictions, relapses, and perhaps in the future something worse. Her life is inescapably miserable, but she continues to drag (much younger and naive) girls into the same issues that face her. Her attitude built up by her unfortunate circumstances may make prevent her from accessing structures of recovery and even positive friend groups, but in the end it creates a lonesomeness from which she cannot escape from without sharing a high with someone who should know better or sweeting on a girl with such a weak bond that she flees at the sight of Odessa's rage. Her love is toxic and 'all [she] touches withers and dies'.
So, Fabiane dies because its the end of the line for her, there is no future where she does not hurt more people. Fabiane dies because she is beyond healing and she has reached that point without intervention. Fabiane dies so that people who matter can live without her dragging them off their proper course. Fabiane dies for 'intracommunity health', an almost fascistic impulse in its nature, but what else is there. The missing stair can still break someone's leg as long as it remains, and there is no better way provide to Odessa to deal with the consequences of Fabiane's continued course of action.
Shit sucks. Dog Days Dog Daze is a tragedy probably playing out in queer communities everywhere while nobody cares.
