I liked the theme, but unless I didn't understand something there's not really any gameplay except for topping up bars for food and medicine?

It's about how you use those resources like food, medicine and fuel. Since they are limited, you must decide who gets what, at what time. You need to use them in such a way that allows the crew to meet their target of 30 fishes.
Also you can repair damages to the boat using the engineer.
