I downloaded this for a quick look, and ended up playing the whole game to the end.
It's brilliant, not only because it's a good technical and ergonomic overhaul. Its much rarer qualities reside in the subtle choices over the modern additions that somehow manage to perpetuate our memory of the original game's unsetlling crush of oppressive darkness, and eerie feeling exploring what we nowadays call a liminal space.
The sounds behind the doors are great for the immersion, and the switch from sprites to 3d models works well, without that unexplainable disappointment we see in similar projects.
I'm now looking forward to buy and play Hold, the author's upcoming original game seemingly built from this engine and assets.
