this really felt like reading danmei. i haven't read much danmei personally but the writing style and the prose was incredibly flowery in the way only danmei would be, despite the fact this is under a japanese setting.
the part that stood out to me the most was when kagamitsuki explains that she is "pretending to be a native". having done some reading on japanese imperialism and as a chinese person myself who knows about some chinese who assimilate into japanese society pretending to be japanese rather than chinese, that really had my stomach churning like a washing machine. in that sense i really understood kagamitsuki's hatred towards swallow, beyond the other political and emotional stuff she had towards the prince.
i also liked the very slight differences between the japanese scene headings and the english scene headings. made me realise i should study harder as i searched up 天敵 and went OHH that's an N1 word!!! felt like i was an elementary student discovering words...
as for the literal relationship between swallow and kagamitsuki, i like how it ranged between coy and extremely toxic. the dialogue made me laugh sometimes in a way that i didn't expect before veering straight into serious prose. the tonal shifts were interesting.
really fun to read! thank you for sharing!
