The plan is to support not only other Spectrum models including the Next, but also other platforms of a similar type, such as the Amstrad CPC, BBC, C64, MSX, etc. possibly even platforms like the NES and Gameboy.
There are plans underway for a possible Kickstarter to fund this advanced development, see here for more..,
