Is there really no way to break that curse?
Have you considered adding a character who could remove a specific brainwashing effect in exchange for a large amount of gold? That way, your choices would still have consequences—you couldn't just undo mistakes for free—but if you really messed something up, you could eventually fix it through a lot of effort.
