It's a really cool idea, but you might end up always giving the same answers, and I'm not sure how much that impacts the story's progression.

It was a game design choice, when i play tested it at first it felt like the player had no control, and a lot of times you couldn't get your words picked at all and it felt frustrating, so i've made the choice to help it along a bit, it is nowhere near 100%, and if it wasn't for a jam and I had a lot of criticism like yours, i would've changed it.
Just for a jam like this and a very short game, i prefered giving players a bit more control :)
