for the first one it was just a design idea as when i did my short bursts of playing the game, i found it ridiculously easy as the game progressed to kill and keep your fuel up, so i added lives as a way to make it some of priority to not take a lot of damage. some people suggested other ways of implementing hits but i implemented it with lives, also for the other 2 points you gave i also felt that after reflecting haha, thank you for the feedback though i will take it into great consideration when if i continue this :)
