Solid advice. The #1 trick I heard (for art conventions) is that it's okay to be awkward and go "hey, I liked your game" at any one random person. Because they TOO are there to meet new people and it's okay to be awkward at first, there is NO smooth way to do it, just break the ice and carry on. It has NEVER happenend to me (well, once) that anybody was rude to me whe I started like that. And one gets better at breaking that ice.
