yeee, I know about it and strangely I'm one of the few who at least quite loves colour theory, there's many different ways to apply colour theory actually! It's not just about shading hehe
for example both the traditional and the pigment colour wheels are used for palletes, not just in illustrations but on marketing, advertising and mostly everywhere you look attempts to use a colour pallete to convey something!!
heck, nine has a near triadic pallete on its own, that's colour theory!

I made an artwork about it! [sorry if it's in spanish, it was schoolwork and wasn't allowed to write in english] so you guys can see the different pallete types that exist, or at least a couple of them.
I must admit that working with these can be a hell, but, once you get the hang of it? you can pull out beauties!
And don't be afraid to mess around with the Saturation and Value when making palletes! they're your friends in balancing out the colours you're going to use!
