Loving this game so far! Quick question: If I refit and choose to go back to a previous area, do I have to re-complete that area to progress or can I go back to the furthest unlocked area the next time I choose to refit?

If you refit and choose to go back to a previous area, you will need to complete that area to progress to the next one. The exception would be if you were at the Core, having completed both the Surface and the Firmament and decided to go back to the Firmament. Then while at the Firmament if you refited you could progress to the Surface instead of the Firmament, because you have also completed the Surface.
