Overall:
One of the coolest original Pong/Breakout clone implementations I've seen, but needs some control and UX issues cleaned up.
What Worked Well:
- Cover Art & Visual Identity: You've got the best cover art out of all of us. It really pops, shows polish, and clearly communicates what the game is. Worth considering whether to carry those exact saturated greens, reds, and blues into the game itself, though maybe you used restraint on purpose and it might actually be too much in-game.
- Core Game Feel: Making a goal already feels satisfying, and the simple two-sound design (ball on player, ball on wall) works really well. Honestly, I'm a bit annoyed by how much time I spent on my own project when yours kept it simple and pulled it off this effectively. With some added game juice, I could genuinely see this being something you could sell.
- Power-Up Concept: The fireball power kick is a cool idea. Give Mega Man Soccer on the SNES a try and see how they handled similar mechanics, solid reference point for where this could go.
Areas for Improvement:
- Control Layout: Having W/S for movement and then P way over on the other side of the keyboard as a main action button is awkward, your hands end up too far apart. This should definitely be reworked.
- Power Kick Implementation: The power kick didn't seem to be working for me during play. Since it's a highlighted mechanic, getting it reliably functional should be a priority.
- Itch.io Presentation & Scaling: The UI as presented on itch needs fixing. It gets too cramped, becomes cropped, and makes scrollbars appear. The game is also quite small on a 1440p monitor. A bigger default size and a fullscreen button would help a lot. Ask an AI after giving it your codebase, it knows what all the itch upload options do.
- Multiplayer Potential: Worth considering down the road. It'd be the toughest engineering piece, but AI can walk you through the whole thing and there are a few free options you can wire it up with.
