Just watched Das Boot yesterday (in english, which was strange since I speak german, but I couldn't find the original, but watched the directors cut 3,5h :O)
I agree with the fuzzyness from part 3, not having numbers as much, rather feeling.
About the fatal hit, a nice aspect of the movie was that being in a fatal state, with some hope of recover through repair. No idea how realistic it is, but for the game to a chance to recover and run back home to save lives and resources.
Then isn't not only fatal and finished, maybe on the next mission the crew would still have more exp that fresh men?
This could be classical 'not-so-punishing' approach. Because building a feeling for the "fuzzyness" will probably be with failures.
And since you have some kind crew moral messaurements, leveling up crew would make sense. The also the topic from the beginning in Das Boot ;)
