I'd hint at it ever so slightly and let the players work it out for themselves. It would be quite reasonable to say that the generator is some kind of super-industrial heavy duty space tech, and that it would be very hard to destroy so they'd need to have found the key card. As with all RPG scenarios, adjust it on the fly to suit the players. If they come up with something novel to try, then just allow it. Unless you want the obelisk showdown to be very dangerous, in which case maybe whatever they are trying just made everything much worse :D
