Really nice job for your first Pygame game! One of the biggest things I noticed was that my partner would get de-synced from me sometimes, and if they died I would die too, so that was a little tough. A cool feature to add from Mario might be the ability to short-hop, so when you let go of jump you don't go all the way up. Something to consider for next time!
