I like the concept, it has potential!
Maybe the "detection area" could be improved, it felt a bit weird at times, and really sudden at first. I don't know how you implemented the gaze mechanic, but maybe you can add something to understand if you're safe or not. First idea that comes to my mind: dim everything and give the human a little flashlight/lamp, so you scare them if you're in the lighted area. Also, dimming the lights could force you to explore a bit to find the objects and how to use them. If you want to do it simple, you could attach to the human a big translucent texture (e.g. 50% alpha, black) with the light area being 100% transparent. Anyway, just an idea.
