I figured out what happens. If you use mouse controls, it works fine. But if you progress dialogue by pressing the z key, the game fucks itself and skips the conversations.

That worked out for me too! Nice game, by the way! The boss was pretty tough, I somehow managed to beat her by rushing her down while her summoned slimes were still there
