The attack enemy is the same button as the interact button but I am guessing you didn't find a body to inhabit?
You can only attack enemies when you are in corporeal form (borrowing a body - your character will change from a dark silhouette to a bright one) else you cannot attack the enemies and will die in 1 hit.
