That’s right, the current UI is not suitable for mass-animating tiles. Fortunately, somebody wrote an extension that makes this much quicker in most cases: https://github.com/lukas-shawford/tiled-bulk-animations. In the latest version, it’s even easier than the animated demo suggests!
