im gonna have to say a more abstract one, a distant door opening.  

all the things happening nearby that startle someone like footsteps around you will spook you in the moment but then you turn around and can confirm nothings around you and it was a spook. the game also kinda likes doing things like that with noises around you that dont mean anything so footsteps would spook you but you kinda have context for them not meaning anything.

the game might open a door near you sometimes, but it never arbitrarily has a distant one open.  when you hear that you know something opened it, and it wasnt you, and it probably wasnt nothing since the game doesnt do that distantly. youll know somethings here but you wont know what.

In this game in particular, it always jumpscares me when I'm working and I hear the door opening behind me. 90% of the time it's a mannequin, 9% it's Kerfur, but every once in a while it's *something else*

yeah thats kinda what i wanna tap into, except the door didnt open behind you and let you immediately find out what it was, it was somewhere distant. so you know something is out there but dont know what or where

I got that something else once. And that something else was NOTHING.

Heard the sound of my front door opening. Looked out the window, didn't see anything. Went to investigate. Nothing. Then I heard another door down the hall open. Went to investigate, still nothing. Was already getting freaked out, headed back to the main room just to see the door to the garage open on its own, followed by the door to the main room. Something invisible was running around my base. Dunno what it was but it eventually ran into me and crashed the game. Was the most terrifying experience I've had in this game in a long time.
