Your plan to put a version of this in the game reminds me of the game Darkstar. As the player progresses through the game, they unlock parts of an in-universe documentary about the game's backstory (which is actually part of the plot - the reason the main character's ship was built was to travel back in time and show humanity the documentary to prevent most of humanity from going extinct).
