As you settle into your seat, imagine the quiet morning mist clinging to the eaves of the Hōshin-ji Temple. You are the caretaker here, tasked with translating the weight of your thoughts into the stillness of the stone garden.

Take a deep breath. Let’s begin.

The Session

Turn 1: The First Stone

  • The Roll: 1.
  • The Choice: You choose Action A: Pebble.
  • The Placement: You place a small circle in the center square (C3).
  • The Shadow: Because the Sun is to the Right, the Pebble casts a shadow to its left. You mark a dot (•) in square C2. For now, no other stone can rest in that shade.

Turn 2: Seeking Flow

  • The Roll: 5.
  • The Choice: You choose Action B: The Dragon’s Tail.
  • The Placement: You draw a diagonal line across three empty squares in the top corner (A4, B3, C2).
  • The Harmony: Interestingly, one of these squares (C2) contains the Shadow Dot from your Pebble. The sand pattern flows through the darkness perfectly.

Turn 3: A Moment of Resistance

  • The Roll: 6.
  • The Choice: You choose Action A: Bonsai Tree.
  • The Placement: You place a triangle in E5.
  • The Shadow: The shadow would fall off the grid to the left of the board. This is Overexposure—a reminder that even beauty has a cost.

Turn 4: Deep Meditation

  • The Roll: 3.
  • The Situation: You look at the board. You want to place a Zen Circle (Ensō), but it requires a 2x2 area. The remaining gaps are too fragmented; the shape will not fit.
  • The Action: You Meditate. You mark an 'X' (a Stray Leaf) in square A1. You accept the imperfection.

The Path to Serenity

The game continues until all 25 squares are filled with ink and intention. You look down at your work:

  • The Shadow's Gift: You count the sand patterns that overlap your shadow dots, gaining +1 point for each.
  • The Rule of Three: You find a cluster of exactly three stone elements touching, feeling the stability it brings (+5 points).
  • Stray Leaves: You subtract 2 points for the 'X' you placed when your mind was restless.

Your final score is 35. You have reached the rank of The Master of Moss. People may now travel leagues just to sit in the silence you have created.
