All time top 3? This is my personal favourite, so what are the other 2? I want to find something as good as this one, and I have been struggling.
I generally refuse to put things on a clear hierarchy as any story has pros and cons and alot comes down to personal preferences. Though for me I didn't read / played that many AVNs, in my favourite pool are besides Cosy Cafe: Ripples, Harem Hotel, Lucky Paradox and The Headmaster. For each I have very different reasons.
Though , after playing all of them, I followed a suggestion that I heard countless times and finally tried Eternum. I have to say I don't want to put down any other AVN, but Eternum is quite literally on another level. Most impressive to me was the excelent choice and amount of music besides the incredible concept which combines movies like Ready Player One, Matrix and a few other genres.
Note that I don't want to say Eternum is somehow "better". Each AVN has its own style and elements which often can't be compared. The nice thing about Cosy Cafe is, that it uses a much more realistic setting. No crazy superpowers of scify elements. It focuses much more on down to earth problems and interactions. To me the lack of choice makes a much better coherent story and you can actually enjoy all the content that fits perfectly together in a single story. Having too many branches in the story will just shorten the story and often creates some inconsistencies. I read somewhere the Cosy Cafe was originally planned as a cafe simulator with a similar week / day cycle as others like Haram Hotel or Lucky Paradox. I think dropping this for a linear story is one of the biggest factors which made the story that great.
Finally one of my first AVN is a (of course now abandoned) story that as a lot less lewd content but an actual story. It's called CobraVenom which is a crime / special agent setting where your partner got killed on a secret mission and you take care of his family. It's a lot more about relationship building and the actual story about the double life. It hasn't quite the quality as others. The original language is russian and in some parts the english translation could have been better, but I thought the story was great. It seems the developer just disappeared after the Ukraine stuff.
Ps: An honorable mention has to be "that new teacher". Even though the story and especially the girls behaviour is way over the top, the humor is actually great and I think the idea of having guest characters of other AVNs built into the story was a phantastic idea. You actually get some tangential interaction with Lucy from Cosy Cafe, but many others from other AVNs, like Stormside (which unfortunately is also abandoned). I would like to see such well integrated cross-promotion between AVNs more often.
Thanks! I've been looking for something on the same level as this since I finished up to the current update. I'll be honest, it got bad enough that I've started writing fanfic for it (specifically, post canon continuation of any events likely to happen that I feel like writing - eg. the founding family meeting in the cafe will be the first chapter). I'll still continue the fic probably, but now I have some more to satiate me. Those ones have actually all had my eye for a while, so thanks for the push to try them!
Depends on what you are looking for. In terms of realism I don't think I've played any that compare to this one(at least that I've tried), but there is That New Teacher which is also a more grounded game. As far as sci-fi ones are involved there are soooo many but if I were to say in terms of story in my personal opinion one of my favorites is Out of touch! One of the only AVN games that has genuinely made me shed a tear and its pretty emotionally rough. Ripples is a very good one as well as having one of my favorite story concepts(TT), and Eternum which most people would tell you is a level above most AVN games and frankly it really is just that impressive. To mention a few more that I truly enjoy would be New Horizon, The Nature of Magic, Oppai odyssey, Cross Realms, Realm Invader, Sicae and My bully is my lover. Something I wanna point out about Realm Invader and Sicae is that its a pretty lackluster start in my opinion so you may feel inclined to drop it but it gets a lot better as you progress and My bully is my lover is, while not as bad of the rip, also somewhat lackluster in the beginning. Another thing I'd like to mention about My Bully is my lover is how misleading the title really is. While its not a completely inaccurate title, after about halfway into the game you start to think that it should have been given a different name altogether. Also Sicae and My bully is my lover share the same author and world so I suggest playing Sicae first as it is chronologically before MBIML
Based on everything I've read, I have to say that Eternum is undoubtedly a masterpiece. It was actually the very first AVN I ever read, and I can say with certainty that its high quality is definitely one of the reasons I kept reading AVNs.
The story is very well crafted, the music is often composed specifically for the game, which makes it more unique compared to other tracks you might find in various AVNs, and all the characters have their place and truly have their own distinct qualities that set them apart. Honestly, even though I plan to keep consuming plenty of AVNs, I don’t think anything will be able to knock this one out of my top 3.
To round out my top 3, I think Ripples is exactly what’s needed. I find the story truly original, and the work itself is very polished. I really love the fact that, within the context of the story, the author can incorporate plot elements that might be a bit confusing at first but ultimately make sense.
I also have to mention Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day(e) by Jonesy (they’re part of the same storyline). Like Cosy Cafe, it’s a linear story, and I really love the writing style. The plot is simpler, yet this AVN is the one that really hit me the hardest. No spoilers, but I can say it took me three days to get over one element of the plot.
An AVN I haven’t touched in a long time but found original as well is The Headmaster. It’s really a mix between an AVN and a management game, and it’s truly the most complete and well-developed game of its kind that I’ve played.
There are plenty of others, but the best I can do is recommend the Lewdflix website (https://lewdflix.com). As the name suggests, it’s a “Netflix for AVNs.” There are over 200 completed games and even more currently in development or even in early access. You can search by theme or by name; it’s truly the most complete platform. By logging in, you can play the games directly on the site. Personally, I prefer to use the site as a catalog and then download the games that interest me from itch.io or f95zone.
