i was also initially confused but my personal interpretation of his smile and dialogue was that he was glad of the socioeconomic and personality barrier and gap between them ? never seeing eye to eye in terms of status or actual eye contact, and then reaching the same gap of one being superior than the other through death - in contrast to gabriel making her reach his status and even higher. he gave her the one solace of a proper burial but she still died a foolish maid with his vague warnings. i remember rutile's comment to alle about calcite possibly taking offense to saying his funeral land's soil being inferior to the more commoner-esque one of alle's parents' burial. i think its an inferior/superior dynamic thing that he wanted to maintain like being friends with someone you take pity for and keep that way. if that makes sense. just my interpretation
