The one thing I have learned is that you need to plan like crazy lol. Hope you best of luck anyway.

you need to draw and write your ideas and plans on a peace of paper or on notes that s what i have learned before when i was making games i was just like add this add that and then am like what am i even making so ya hope that helps 

You can make your game more interesting first and then make it fun!!

In our personal opinion, Do not focus on winning. Sure there are awesome rewards and it would be really cool to get it, but making sure you had/have fun is a big part too! in game jam #8 our crew got 35th place, sure we were a tad dissapointed and wish we could do better, but at the same time we had a ton of fun and used it as a chance to grow as developers!
