I must admit that the school scene was a little bit confusing. if you explore more you can see that you can pick up books scattered in classrooms, and the poster indicates how much book is left. after collecting all of them you should be able to break out of the loop and exit. for the theme...well...you can think of this as an underworld that's beneath our earth's surface with scary elements and its own unique logic.
